I have stumbled across another hidden gem on BBC1 weekday afternoons - WPC 56.

Set in the 1950s with appropriate music and background it focuses on a rookie WPC who is the first woman police officer in a Black Country/Birmingham police station.

It highlights the bigotry and attitudes within the police force at that time, has surprisingly gritty story lines for its time slot and the occasional sparkle of humour.

Third episode tomorrow, previous episodes available on iPlayer and Catch up tv.

I'm hooked already - fab characters, casting, plots and lovely old cars.

I agree it would be better on a sunday [even if it was only for the ratings]. There's a load of crap on saturday and sunday nights now in my opinion!
