I wonder if even the most devout libertarian, would say after sitting in a 5 hour traffic jam on the way to his or her continental holiday,

"Well these poor desperate people are only coming here for a better life"

Do you have a solution? I can't see any prospect of any improvement unfortunately- things can only get worse
I don't think people are queueing to escape Cameron's Britain in search of a better life AOG: have you seen the weather recently :-)
FF I agree with you. AOG, the quoted line IMO can only come from someone who lives within the vicinity or will be affected long term over what is happening in this country. I'd like to know why France isn't stopping all this happening their end and WHY aren't lorries locked up securely to stop the bstrds getting into them!
The current problems are more to do with the French workers going on strike than directly due to immigrants. The 'calais hoards' are trying to get into the channel tunnel and walk the rail lines now not just get on trucks.
The last time the lorry drivers were held up for 24hrs, BBC radio found one who had every sympathy with the immigrants, thought the nasty tory government ought to do more to help them and railed against the 'cuts' in general.
Not, I suspect, a view shared by many drivers, but we'll never know because he was the only one they interviewed. ( that is, the only one they chose to broadcast)
Tear gas and water cannon is now the only answer to get rid of these migrants. We need to start going in hard.

Where would that get rid of them to?
//The current problems are more to do with the French workers going on strike than directly due to immigrants.//

the SeaFrance SCOP, which impounded the 2 DFDS ferries at the beginning of July, released them at the start of this week, pending talks next monday brokered by the french ministry of transport. there is no industrial action at this time.
The problems appear to be on the French side of the Channel, not on ours,
so its clear that the French authorities need to do much more to stop this problem.

I heard some French Calais official being interviewed on the Today Program this morning, and while he sounded somewhat overwhelmed by the situation, he didn't exactly fill me with confidence.
It's not hard to see why some won't try too hard to stop them making it over the channel to England

I never suggested it bouncer- dave50 did. Maybe that ruling was just for London anyway.

the causes might be in calais, but the effects are most definitely being felt in kent - i was in folkestone yesterday and saw/experienced it first hand. because the M20 is effectively closed beyond maidstone, much of the rest of south-east kent is jammed to a standstill. not only is this costing international haulage traffic £0.75m a day, but local kent traders and industries are suffering as their customers cannot reach them, nor can they get their wares out. the fact that holidaymakers might be delayed a few hours pales into insignificance when set against the issues now affecting kent.
Causes for this problem!

The UK for giving hand out's & allowing Asylum,

The French Government for not doing their Job & allowing this to happen in the first place.
I don't think the French are happy about it either.
If the problem was the other way around Ummmm, do you think the French would stand for it?
They wouldn't have much choice.
We need to close the port now. We have other ports, divert the trucks and ferries to Felixstowe or Bristol. No easy but possible.

Then we can get Britain moving again and only have the Euro Tunnel to police on the French side.

France gets at least 10x as many illegal immigrants than show up at Calais. Far more of them arrive in France and stay than come to Calais.
We just see a small tip of a very large iceberg.
