The Oldie Genius Crossword 398
1 Answers
I do not wish to spoil the enjoyment of anybody who is doing this puzzle, and will therefore try and phrase my query carefully so that it doesn't give anything away.
The preamble to the puzzle states :- "Most clues are normal. 6 of them have no definition, but the wordplay gives the correct answer. The answers do have one thing about them. A word can be added to give an extended solution. Please write this word under the completed grid".
I have completed the puzzle and identified the word involved. My problem/query is as follows:- There are 5 clues which do not have a definition and the wordplay gives an answer to which the "word" can be added to give an extended solution. Identifying the 6th clue of this type is problematic because there are 2 contenders. The first has no definition but you cannot add the word to the answer to give an extended solution. The second can have the word added to give an extended solution but, "unfortunately", does have a very clear definition - which it's not supposed to have.
I realise this query, as I have defined it, can only be responded to by someone who is trying to complete the actual crossword but, hopefully, there are enough of those connected to The AnswerBank for somebody to solve my lack of satisfaction. TIA.
