ps1 games played on ps2 console

we've recently bought a 2nd hand ps2 which seems to work fine but when we play our old ps1 games on it the games won't save on the memory card we got with console. is it a problem with memory card or just how it is with playing ps1 games on ps2?

you need to save ps1 game files on a ps1 memory card even though your playing it on a ps2.
