iPod troubles

I'm having some problems with my iPod and would immensely grateful if anyone could help me I feel lost without my music!!!
I went to listen to my iPod the other day but it was completely empty, there were no music files on there. My music was still on iTunes and I'm sure I didn't delete it all off my iPod. So I went to load it all back on but when I connected my iPod to my laptop via the USB cable it said something about how my iPod couldn't be read because I needed to update my iPod software. So I updated, and also updated to iTunes 7, but no joy, my iPod didn't appear in the source pane and I got a message saying I need to update my iPod buy clicking on the summary tab in iPod preferences the thing is I cant find iPod preferences or the summary tab anywhere, I'm thinking maybe its an option that appears when your iPod shows in the source pane, but as mine isn't showing I don't get the option. I've since uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it again but still no joy. The apple help pages haven't helped me at all, and I begrudge paying iTunes to fix it when it seems to have broken for no apparent reason!! Please can anyone help? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

If there was some more serious low-level problem, it wouldn't even appear as a drive. Try restarting the computer, plugging your usb cable into a different usb port, and then plugging your iPod in. If iTunes doesn't load automatically, then start it up. Does it say anything at all about your iPod, any sort of warning or anything?

Hi fo3nix, I tried your suggestion but its still saying 'iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod. Go to the summary tab in iPod preferences and click Restore to restore this iPod to factory settings'. I've tried all sorts of things and it's just not working, I think I'm about ready to admit defeat and take myself off to an apple store! Thanks for your help anyway...
You could try this:

Some other articles of interest on Apple's iPod support site. Have you tried resetting the iPod by holding the middle button and play/pause button for a few seconds until the Apple logo appears?

still reading this?
if so, I've just had basically the same problem. And after an hour of messing about, I've sorted it! Though, I'm not sure exactly why its now working, since nothing really has changed.
Plug your iPod in, open iTunes, and it won't stop. From the help menu, run diagnostics on the iPod. Is it the last of the 4 lights on the left that errors? If so, click that help button next to it. Then, just follow all of those instructions.
I did all that and it didn't help, then right at the end it tells you to disable all services and try that. That still didn't work, so I enabled the services I want to start up again and restarted (this time with iPod attached from the beginning, even before windows had started), and opened iTunes and it worked!

how about trying a transfer that can recover lost or missing music or backup and restore all of your iPod/iPhone/iTouch content; including your favorite songs, videos, photos, playlists and more.
