does anyone know of any games that are like monkey island ie puzzle solving ect thanks

Lucas Arts did a whole range of that sort of game.
4 Monkey Islands, 2 Indiana Jones, Grim Fandango and others. You occasionally see them in the bargain bin at Game/Gamestation.

This genre of game does not have any major releases, but there are lots of people submitting them from programming them as a hobby.

The Broken Sword series is very good, not as good as the peerless MI, but still a lot of fun and good scenery.
