help! atuck on Sims Castaway!

Had Sims 2 castaway for Xmas and am stuck already! Am still on the original island all alone. Have all the materials to build my raft, but not the mechanical skill. I'm sure i build my mechanical skill by making tools...have made an axe, and a torch, the only other available option is to make a sewing kit, but i can't figure out where to get Twine - is it harvested from a plant or do you have to craft it from more than one plant? if i keep making torces over and over will that build my mechanical skill? have got plenty of softwood to make torches. Thanks in advance!

Got to say, I'm stuck too (why I went and found that ^^) I've given the 'nanas to the gardener and nada, I can't seem to get the next "offer help" option, any ideas?

Twine is something you make using your craft bench. You need sisal to make it.
