Buying blu-ray and Hd dvds!?
5 Answers
Hi there, i have a ps3 and hd ready tv. When putting in standard dvds the ps3 (and im sure many other hd-blu ray players) upscale the quality from standard to 720p or 1080i so if so, why would you buy an hd dvd for about 25 when you can get the same one for 5 and it will be the same quality?? or am i missing something really obvious? Thanks for any help

High def DVDs output their picture information at 720p or 1080i or p whereas standard def DVDs output at 720p. High definition DVDs offer you greater picture quality than standard discs, this is especially so when viewed on a large 42" screen.

No, you are missing the point an upscaled standard DVD will not be of the same visual quality as a Blu ray DVD. High def DVDs output their picture information at 720p or 1080i or p (depending on the screen's ability ) whereas standard def DVDs output at 576p. High definition DVDs offer you greater picture quality than standard discs, this is especially so when viewed on a large 42" screen.

I thought PAL (European) DVDs output at 576 lines
US DVDs are 480 lines.
I am not aware of any DVDs that can output at 720P.

pug100, I placed my append just as you posted your correction.
Also Amm-arD, while technology can "upscale" there is no getting away from the fact that you are starting from an original of only 576 lines on DVD.
They use fancy algorithms and other technology to "improve" the picture but it will never be as good as an image that started at 720p or 1080i.

Upscaling will never be able to add details that are not there in the original DVD.
Imagine a field full of flowers. In the high-def version you can see very small red and yellow flowers. In the standard DVD version you can see an orange blur. Upscaling will never recreate red and yellow flowers because that info is not there in the original DVD.
