Sonic Rush for DS Lite

I am completely new to this whole gaming thing so im looking for some help. On sonic rush for the nintendo DS on level 4 act 2 the fairground type one i am sooooo stuck!!! There is a bit that you need to jump up to continue the level and i cant get by it at all. I know you press down on the spring and then it doesnt quite get you high enough. Ive managed it once and then got killed seconds later and ive never been able to do it since (total fluke first time!)

Can anyone help me, in plain english please as it really dont know what im doing yet!
