Do PS2 games from the USA play on UK console?

I regularly buy DS games from the US as I know that they work fine on DS lites here, but do PS2 games work here on a UK console or is a hit or a miss - I don't want to make an expensive mistake!

As far as i know, the ps2 isnt region free (unlike ps3) so if you buy a UK game which is PAL you wont be able to use it on an american NTSC ps2 or vice versa. So no it wouldnt work.

Thanks Mantessa - I had a feeling it wouldn't - I have just ordered some DS ones instead.
