I don't know much about Wiis, but my daughters both want one for Christmas.

Can I just go into a store and buy a Wii that they BOTH could use at the same time or would I need to buy additional accesories?

The basic console package comes with the console, one wiimote and one nunchuk controller and wii sports. If you buy an extra nunchuk and wii play, you get a wiimote with wii play, enough controllers for two people.

The bundled games are ok, but they will probably want something else, there are plenty of games aimed at girls and families available, so you can have a go as well.
