I see firebox have a 'pocket cinema' that says it does the trick but I am a bit unsure how good it is for gaming, size is not really the issue here, but important issues would be the price, ease to setup and picture quality oh and sound ideally

Sound shouldn't be a problem, you can hook up separate sound equipment to the console itself in most cases.

Why do you want to project onto the ceiling anyway?

we are always limited on the size of screen due to limited space thought this might be the answer
I was reading up on an AV forum. What is most usual to do in this case is to have a projector and a mirror, the mirror should be at roughly 45 degrees to project onto the ceiling. This was because many projectors cool from the front, so standing them upright means dust clogs the system (and the bulb breaks and often a bulb can cost £300!).

The spec on firebox suggests 50” wide image, but for clarity of image, I am unsure how good it will really be.

The visitor reviews at the bottom of the page here: http://www.firebox.co...Pocket-Cinema?via=ser seem pretty positive

BUT it does look like it is AV-in only, so XBox, PS3 etc are probably not going to be able to be plugged in and certainly wont be HDMI.
The Eds point about not mounting them vertically is only true for projectors with a traditional bulb in them, cooling isn't an issue with one of those little ones as they use LEDs in place of normal bulbs.

And the Xbox will work fine with it as long as you have the Xbox AV lead that gives a composite output, but at 640 x 480 resolution it's not going to be a great picture for gaming.
