X box 360 E74 error

Horror of horrors, our xbox is displaying an E74 error. I understand it has to go away for repair.

Does anyone have any idea how much this is likely to cost?

Isn't the E74 covered under warantee now?

If you're handy with a soldering-iron it's an easy fix. it's almost always caused by overheating, which melts a solder joint between GPU and the motherboard.

It is covered by warranty up to three years. FH reckons he bought it about 3 years ago and it was second hand then so I guess we are out of luck.

Unfortunately, neither of us knows one end of a soldering iron from another!

It used to be £50 and you get a refurbished one back. I was very impressed with the quick turnaround time. I think it comes back with a 3 month warranty.

You don't need to use a soldering iron if you want to attempt a fix yourself. You can 'hotbox' it i.e. place a towel over the vents and let it heat up until the solder joints reflow and connection is restored. I would go for the refurb option though!

If you google xbox 360 hotbox there is bound to be a better explanation somewhere.

Thanks Matt, I think we will try and get it repaired as a first option though, I can't afford a new one just after Christmas (bloody typical that we got the kids Kinect for Christmas too).
