Game Controller To Use On Laptop

I want to buy a basic controller to play a very basic online game called Toejam & Earl on my laptop. It can be played using the keyboard keys, but the aim of the game is to wander around different maps so a controller with a joystick would be much better and would also allow me to sit further back from the screen.
So I am looking for recommendations of basic controllers that would work with it and with the game (which is bought via 'Steam' if that makes a difference?). I have had a look online and the only criteria I know to search for is that it has a USB connection - but then it seems to show controllers for PS3 or Nintendo etc which I don't need.
