PSP playing games that are a different region?

I've bought a white psp in Hong Kong with probably the latest firmware installed with it. It states in the instruction manual that it will only play region three or all region umd game discs. I'm planning to use it primarily in the uk but psp games in the uk are region 2. I've read reports that it should still work. Is this true? If so are there any plans to actually implement region locking into future games. I want to be assured that m purchase is worth the money.
