If you are interested in the underground tube system then you should read the biography of Marc isambard Brunel ( isambard kingdom Brunels father) who engineered the "The Thames tunnel" the first ever tunnel built under a river . It runs fom Wapping to Rotherhithe and was first used be stage coaches and pedestrians. It is now used on the east end tube system , and if you stand on the wapping/rotherhite sation platforms you can observe the tube trains entering the twin horseshoe shaped brick arches . There is losts of stuff on google etc. so have a look.
