Im doing a friends family tree. Ive received a marriage certificate fro another Ancestry member but cannot understand it. The marriage is at Wrentham, Suffolk. BMD Ref Blything 4A 851 in Dec 1913

The groom is Frederick WM Cage ( which I know about ) but bride is Eliza King, spinster aged 29 (1884) but states father as Henry Smith. As she is unmarried I cannot underst

and why surname is different from father. Ive found an Eliza King birth on FBMD Sept 1884 in Blything which Im presuming to be her. I dont want to send for this birth cert unless I have to
The witnesses on the marriage cert is a David King and Charles Bacon. Ive tried on every census to find any of these names in that area but having no luck at all.

Any help appreciated

Could she have been adopted? Or could she actually be the child of Henry Smith's wife (from a previous marriage) and he called himself her father, acted as her father and so stated he was her father on the certificate? Is Eliza on the 1911 with her father?
I think this might be Eliza in 1911 - she is the only Eliza King coming up as born in 1884/5 in Suffolk anyway:

KING ELIZA (RG14PN5775 RG78PN263 RD93 SD6 ED9 SN235)
Address IVY LODGE THE SQUARE FRESHWATER BAY County Hampshire
District Isle of Wight Subdistrict Calbourne
Enumeration District 9 Parish Freshwater

This is the household:
ANDERSON, EMILY HEAD SINGLE F 50 PRIVATE MEANS LANCASHIRE CHILDWALL
ANDERSON, JANE SISTER SINGLE F 45 PRIVATE MEANS LANCASHIRE CHILDWALL
KING, ELIZA SERVANT SINGLE F 26 COOK SUFFOLK BARTON
ENEVEN, MAY SERVANT SINGLE F 17 HOUSEMAID YORKSHIRE ACCOMBE

Do you think this is her? Does help with the Smith connection though!!! Will keeplooking for you.
Here are all the David King's in Suffolk on the 1911:

HOUSEHOLD KING DAVID M 1883 28 Bury St Edmunds Suffolk
HOUSEHOLD KING DAVID M 1854 57 Ipswich Suffolk
HOUSEHOLD KING DAVID M 1844 67 Blything Suffolk
HOUSEHOLD KING DAVID M 1891 20 Blything Suffolk
HOUSEHOLD KING DAVID M 1891 20 Blything Suffolk
HOUSEHOLD KING DAVID HENRY M 1854 57 Ipswich Suffolk
HOUSEHOLD KING DAVID HUGH M 1885 26 Woodbridge Suffolk
HOUSEHOLD KING DAVID JOHN M 1882 29 Ipswich Suffolk

If you can say which one it's likely to be, I can view the record and see if Henry Smith or Eliza are present ... but need to be sure which one as am running out of 1911 census credits!!!

Will give you same list for Charles Bacon shortly, even if just to rule out any connection between him and Eliza from a census point of view............
Here are the 1911 census results for Charles Bacon in Suffolk:

HOUSEHOLD BACON CHARLES M 1892 19 Sudbury Suffolk
HOUSEHOLD BACON CHARLES M 1838 73 Sudbury Suffolk
HOUSEHOLD BACON CHARLES M 1859 52 Sudbury Suffolk
HOUSEHOLD BACON CHARLES M 1901 10 Risbridge Suffolk
HOUSEHOLD BACON CHARLES D M 1880 31 Ipswich Suffolk
HOUSEHOLD BACON CHARLES L M 1899 12 Mutford Suffolk
HOUSEHOLD BACON LOUIS CHARLES M 1896 15 Blything Suffolk

Let me know if any of these needs a closer look.

Thanks echokilo

Thanks for your help. I dont know what age David King is. He could be a brother or uncle etc. I have checked the 1911 census for each David King, but not come up with anything.
Looking at the cert again, it could be Charles Bacon or even Dacon. Its very hard to transcribe.
Thanks for trying. I will see if I can connect any Kings up to Smiths in case your first theory is right
Think it's most likley that Henry was her step father ... and so perhaps you can find a marriage for him and a Mrs King? It's a tricky one though - keep me posted and if I think of any other possibilities I will post again x

There is a Henry Smith marrying an Emily King in 1892 in Cosforth, so I will look further into that when I can

Thanks again
To bear out the location for Eliza King (IOW in 1911) I have found her on the 1901 census as a servant for Wm and Emma Demey at Fornham Road Bury St Edmunds. In 1891 she is with her parents Charles (1848) and Susan (1849) and their 7 other children at Fornham Road, Gt Barton (Bury St Edmunds) - and in 1901 this family is in the same place, but with Eliza missing. I have looked for a death of Charles King (leaving his wife free to remarry Henry Smith - but I have not found one as yet. And even if I did this would mean SUSAN KING marrying Henry Smith - and not the Emily Smith you have found .................. so no further forward really!! Arrgghh!!
You've lost me.............if Eliza is the one born in 1884 her parents were Charles King and Susan Brown who married in 1871 and had 12 children, 10 of whom were still living in 1911............I believe Charles King died in 1930.
Question Author
Thanks craft. I will look at all this more closely when I get home as I cannot do it on my works comp. Sites are very restricted.
I may not have the right person at all Craft - it's just a theory - ie Henry Smith may be listed as her father on the marraige certificate if he married Eliza's mother (hence the difference in surname) However, if you say her biological father (Charles) didn't die until 1930, it's unlikley her mother remarried Henry Smith (not sure divorce was common enough then??) Unless of course there is a possibility Henry Smith WAS actually her biological father and this was common knowledge by the time of her (Eliza's) marriage ..... I may be way off track with this one, it's just a possibility.
Was her father given as deceased? The Eliza daughter of Charles and Susan was not the eldest child and none of her siblings appear to have been anything but the children of Charles and Susan, i don't believe that is her at all. I am looking at an Eliza and a David from woodbridge I think
I wonder if Eliza was the illegitimate daughter of Miriam King who had an illegitimate son called David King in 1885
As ever the voice of reason Dotty - think you are on to something - and I was barking up the wrong tree (forgive the pun) as I suspected - Stick with Dott, TheOtherHalf - mucg more sensible!!
Question Author
Thanks again Dotty and everyone. I will look into this more when I can as I dont like to let a puzzle go if I can help it. Even though its someone elses tree, I feel I know everyone like my own family when Ive been doing them for a while. I get so involved
