family tree 1911 census lookup
If anyone can look at the 1911 for Pickering Workhouse, there is a Betsey Wilson admitted March 1911 and discharged end May 1911 born 1877, does she have children with her or a husband? Her occupation was a servant, she was in and out of that place for 10 years and seemed to be a local woman,

If Suna gets a reply from the lady with the workhouse records it may reveal more about Grace.
No I don't think we have enough evidence that the Betsey in the workhouse was Grace's mother, infact she only seems to have had those 2 children entered on the 1911 Rose found, I think Dinah was Betsey's mother though, found her on the 1901 and earlier returns and it is probable she was. Because Grace named one of her daughters Betsey though, it is possible that the Betsey in the workhouse was related to Grace , though nothing to back that up as yet except the link with Pickering Workhouse. (and a hunch)

Hi John,
Thanks for your e-mail. I can't be much help, but the Pickering Workhouse records give some information. I believe that the place of birth when it was in a workhouse was often fudged, so that the child wouldn't be stigmatised. Certainly the workhouse was in or very close to Whitby Road; it was also possible that births took place in the house of a local midwife and number 5 might have been either her own house or one owned by the Board of Guardians for the express purpose of having babies.
I'm enclosing the information as an attachment in the hope that the layout will remain readable. If you have any problems reading or understanding the information, don't hesitate to contact me.
