Hi,

I have been pointed in this direction to ask a question. As yet I haven't subscribed to a genealogy site and have started to research my grandmothers paternal side.

Her father Arthur Whiteford(whittford), Studdard(Stoddard) Tom Thatcher, (b~1877- d 1960 in Worthing), comes up on "Family Search"

And all tallies well including wife and bretheren. But thats it I can get no further. My understanding is his father may have been a doctor possibly in Lambourn,Berks. but I can't get a birth certificate as I haven't really got enough relevant info. Can someone help if even by pointing me in the right direction please

youe arthur is on a tree in ancestry that has his father as joseph and his mother as louisa malt from lamborn but she died in 1872 according to the tree but her son arthur whitford studdord tom thatcher was born 1875. it's got him marrying mary williamson too, joseph thatcher in 1871 is a machinist.
mmmm in 1881, joseph is a widower, he still has his son william with him BUT , here's the wierd thing, there is a Annie Steptoe aged 28 living there with a son Arthur T Steptoe aged 4, and Frank Steptoe aged 1. The joseph is the same one on the tree that has his son as arthur whitford studdord tom thatcher- but joseph is only living with his servant annie steptoe and her 2 children, arthur t and frank. mmmmmm

I had a look at that one Dotty but discounted it as there was no Walter and the birth date for Arthur was too early...............

yes craft but on ancestry there is a tree with the right arther with his full name but with a father joseph and mother louisa, tracking that back, louisa died before arthur was supposedly born anyway, and then i've found arthur t steptoe living with joseph and later changing his name to arthur t thatcher when his mother annie married joseph thatcher in 1888. it makes sense and explains why we're not finding a walter.

But Arthur's marriage records show Walter and Louisa as being alive............

and this arthur t thatchers brother frank, who was 1 in 1881, in 1901 is a stable lad/groom, for a william herbert grey who is a race horse trainer in lambourn........!

yes, but i think arthur has told a few untruths. he was likely illegitimate, he couldn;'t marry in a scottish church i don;t think

So the info on the marriage record is rubbish..................having said that the info on my grandfather's scottish marriage was a pack of lies as well.

the race horse trainer, william peter grey, has 2 children who were born in newmarket

and his eldest was born in redcar....

Well they married in Bourtree Park, Ayr (doesn't say if that's a church)

william peter grey, the trainer, 30 years earlier in 1871, is a jockey living with about 20 other jockeys for a scottish trainer in yorkshire

in 1911 arthur's brother frank is still a stud groom in Fawley, Berkshire,
the birth of Arthur Thomas Steptoe is registered at hungerford Q4 1874 ref 2c 249. I am pretty sure that is the right one for arthur stoddard whitford tom thatcher anyway.

just found that arthur's mother annie was the daughter of John Steptoe and Sarah Ellis, not come across any stoddard or whiteford at all on that side.

Morning Dotty and Carl thank you for your interest. I contacted the owner of that tree and thought that was the path too, but he also was thrown by the anomalies and says he went along the wrong route when he checked the censuses and hasn't updated his site recently

Also after talking to the owner Joseph is logged as a traction engine driver not a doctor as walter was

Stevie what makes you so sure his father was a doctor?

Apparantly his wife Mary often told my grandmother Gwen that was the case, but my grandmother knew no more than that
