Hi

My brother has asked where there are any sites one doesn't have to pay for on searching about families. He thought Ancestry site was free when he went on there but of course it's not. Can anyone advise please or are they all pay as you use sites? Many thanks.

Are you trying to trace living or deceased relatives?'

Deceased, family history that sort of thing.
I'm not sure about Genes Reunited, they might be free for some searches.

Family Search org
Genes Reunited is a subscription site, as are FMP, ancestry, and thegenealogist. You can use ancestry for free at your local public library.
ancestry has the 1911 census free at the moment and it is free to look at the 1881 census, you can also use familysearch.org to look for baptisms and marriages from 1558 to the 1920s for many parishes around the world including England.

You can also use Find My Past and Origins free at the library.
When I first started researching my family some 10/12 years ago, most sites were free...but because it is a very popular past time (to give it a name)...they started cashing in on it....so unfair!!!!!
There is also Freecens which has some census online, and try Rootsweb or Rootschat.
I've found that FreeBMD is very useful...
