Im due to have an op on my shoulder next wednesday. I work tuesday to friday plus saturday morning, monday is my day off. I am expecting to be off 2 weeks. My manager has told me to swap my day off, monday, for wednesday. That way will save me a days pay as I wont have a sick note until after the op. She then says I have to stand the first 4 days. Our wages department is notorious for getting things wrong, in their favour of course. Please can someone tell me when I should start getting ssp, thank you

Do you mean SSP (Statutory Sick Pay) or OSP (Occupational Sick Pay)
The first four days off work you don't get paid. Sick pay starts after that.

statutary sick pay, contract says we have company sick pay at their discretion but no-one knows anyone to have been paid it
You need to look through Chris's link then.

You can get £85.85 per week Statutory Sick Pay if you’re too ill to work. It’s paid by your employer for up to 28 weeks.

You need to qualify for SSP and have been off work sick for 4 or more days in a row (including non-working days).

You can’t get less than the statutory amount. You can get more if your company has a sick pay scheme (or ‘occupational scheme’) - check your employment contract. etc etc
You must serve three waiting days and those days must also be Qualifying Days. A Qualifying Day (QD) is a day you would normally work so had you been sick on Monday, the three QDs would have been Tuesday,Wednesday and Thursday. Whether the Monday is swapped for Wednesday or no, you must go for three working days without SSP so I can not see the benefit in the swap.
Its worth making an application to work for sick pay. It might be that no-ones been known to receive it because no-ones asked for it?

Its important to put it in writing. Write a short polite note to request sick pay under the descretionary arrangement. Say that you will be in financial hardship on SSP and since your opertation is relatively minor (play it down) and you don't expect to be off for more than a month (keep your options open), it shouldn't be a drain on rescources like a long term sick would be.

thanks for your replies. It was the day swap I couldnt get my head round, it was made out to be doing me a favour, now someone else gets new years eve off! never mind, the op has to be done, I shall be reading answerbank one armed for a while
The bit about being sick for four days in a row including non-working days is not the same as the rule about the three waiting days. The four days is about linking periods of sickness and a spell of sickness must last at least four days otherwise it does not count as a period of sickness. If you take an example of someone working only Mondays and Tuesdays, if they are sick for two weeks, they will not be paid SSP until the second Tuesday because their three waiting days will be Monday, Tuesday and the following Monday. If they then go off sick a month later for a week, that links with the previous spell and they had already served the three waiting days so the SSP starts immediately
I've had too much wine to calculate this, but if you are working Monday instead, your SSP will not start any earlier, as the pay will be worked out from your contracted shifts, not not shift swaps or overtime etc.
