Should I be concerned that my name is incorrectly recorded in the online BMD register?

I have an unusual name and when read quickly it is often mistaken for a more more common name.

do you mean the filmed index? That is a copy of the index from the local register office, check with the local office to see how it is indexed there and also ask them to check the name in the actual register, as when the registrar made the certified at the time of the registration, they may have made an error, it does happen. You can add an amendment to the ancestry transcription even though the error is in the opriginal index created by the GRO, the same for any site it is on i think, ask the local registrar if they can also add a note to their entry maybe? It would have to be verified conclusivly that an error was made.

It isn't a scanned image it is transcribed.

A friend spotted it on www.findmypast.co.uk I don't know what their source information is.
the GRO index, just add a correction, if you are not on findmypast your friend can submit an alteration. If the original filmed GRO index is correct it's nothing to worry about, just ask your mate to add the amendment. Have you checked to see if ancestry has mis-transcribed it too? If you want me to look i can, [email protected], will understand if you'd rather get someone in your family to look at ancestry tho.

Thanks Dot.
amendment submitted for ancestry to correct from their end in due course, put on a temporary note with correct information.
I'm sure craft would be happy to submit an amendment on FMP if you ask her.

I'll keep an eye out for Craft. Thanks for your help.

Hi Eccles, you can email me at [email protected]
one of my daughters surname is incorrect on the GRO Register. They have given her my maiden name instead of my husband`s/father`s name,I rang them up to tell them only to be told ,nothing can be done.It doesn`t REALLY matter as her birth certificate is correct, but for genealogy reasons, could lead someone up the wrong path or even into a brick wall.
I dont think it matters kloofje

My surname is routinely scrambled and it is not as tho I start off with the name John Smith

and reflect on poor Dr Cloete who hared back to South Africa because the ill educated house holders of South Wales mistook paediatrician for paederast,
and erm burnt down her house !

Craft, I've emailed you.

Thanks.
