Thanks Dot, I've found the answer by trawling the newspaper archives. It transpires the person concerned was implicated in the murder of a game keeper in 1868.
Go on DO tell all, we love a good bit of gossip here :)

Sorry craft, not that one. I'll post the gossip when I've done a bit more research.
I found a relly who had been deported for stealing two loaves.
I found an ancestor of my husbands who had been whipped for stealing a sheep in the early 1800s.

Several whole families that were in workhouses.

An Aunt to married a bigamist. Amazing what newspaper archives throw up.
