Is there anywhere on line where I can search national service records - have the regiment and service number, wondered if there were records about his time in the army?

No ... nothing. These sites seem to be for war records ... this was National Service.

They are not available online, you have to send off for them. I sent off for my dad's from 1960, my dad was alive at the time so he signed the form and I didn't need to pay but for anyone not living, they cost £30.
