Finding Birth Parents

how do you find your birth parents. my friend s , happy growing up. she knows she has two brothers. she was born 1964. she thinks she has irish connections. if we start with her adoptive parents... where do we go from there. i was born in 1953 when they introduced the new birth certificate which never had a space for marital status or name of father. probably because of illegitamacy. it was also much cheaper my mum went spare. how long was this in existence? any advice much appreciated.
