Doing A Shirley Valentine
41 Answers
I’ve been watching ‘Our Shirley Valentine Summer’ where a group of eight mature female celebrities were wafted away to a Greek island on a quest for love and self-discovery. Would you like to do a 'Shirley Valentine' and if so, why - and where would you go?

I would never do a "Shirley Valentine" as I strongly believe if you make a concerted effort to go find something you never will. Too many desperate middle aged ladies looking for lurve when they should be out enjoying themselves as singles. Anyway, if I found myself wanting to go somewhere on my own it would be a Nordic country as I find the thought of a log cabin ,crackling log fire with snow slowly falling outside much more romantic than laying on a tourist beach covered in suntan cream being pestered by Greek men lol!
I'm quite young still however I think the question is somewhat pertinent to women of any age and I'm the same as NoM, I wouldn't want another partner if anything happened to this one (despite the doubtless protestations of some folks that I would) but I love travel and meeting new people so yes I would go to a Greek Island, or anywhere, and if someone proved me wrong about the partner angle great, but I'd never go looking I don't think, however more power to people who do. My Grandmother married a MUCH younger guy from Macedonia / Bulgaria quite a few years ago now and everyone said at the time he was after her money blah blah blah but he wasn't he had his own and he's still here and he's great and we all love him, so it does happen. Go for it whoever is thinking about it x
AuntLydia, The Shirley Valentine in the movie didn’t go looking for love. She was married to a man who took her for granted, her children were grown up and gone, and she felt that, over the years, she’d lost her own identity. It began as a two week holiday – but having ‘rediscovered’ the real Shirley Valentine during that two weeks, she never returned home.
Naomi Ah! that sounds like a better movie than I thought it was. I thought it was about a group of women going to look for a bit on the side in Greece that's why I've never bothered watching it. I don't think I could do that, leave on holiday and never go home. Mmmm might watch that now if I can find it on Sky. Thanks!
I suppose I did do a SV many years ago. After I got divorced I went touring some islands in Scotland on my own for a week (loved it so much went back and did the same the next year). That was a lot about self-discovery.
Although when a Turkish barman came on VERY strong, I regret to say I sent my friend an "SOS" text and legged it to my room and locked myself in!
