In 1861 he is living in Sheff with his wife Eliza and brother Thomas, in 1871 he was living with his wife and children in Sheff can't find them on the 1881 census anywhere but have got them still in Sheff on the 91 and 01 census' It says on the census' that he was born in Sheff but don't know what year so can't find his parents this is the only ref to a William and brother Thomas I could find in 1841 anywhere! William died in 1916 aged 77 which fits in with the census' but on his marriage cert of 1856 says he's 19! It's a real puzzle.
In the 1851 census theres a Thos Johnson listed as a servant to the Barlow family; his age is given as 17; the head of the household is Josh Barlow, aged 52 and born in Derbyshire. The family is resident in Barlow, but the image of the census is very difficult to read.
There are several people called William Johnson born in the mid to late 1830s in Sheffield in the same census; the most likely has his year of birth given as 1839 and is living in Brightside with his parents George and Mary and his older sister Ann. They are living at 39 Walker Street, Brightside Bierlow, Sheffield.
William Johnson, aged 2, and Thomas Johnson, aged 8, are listed together in the 1841 census; that census doesnt show family
Relationships, but the woman I guess to be their mother is called Mary.
There is a William Johnson and wife Elizabeth in the 1881 census in Sheffield living at 171 Tinsley Road; there is a Wm Johnston aged 42, in the same census, living in Headford St, Sheffield, whose wife is called Eliza and whose children are George, John, Eliza, Fred, William, Emma and Florence. This family appears in the 1871 census with their surname spelt Johnson.
If a family disappears from one census to the next (and your are searching on ancestry) its always worth putting in as many details as you can, without the surname this will help you find mistranscriptions.

Thanks so much Hammond Egg (love the pun!) lots of stars for you, you're a life saver!
The 'Johnston' family you found in 1881 is indeed the one I've been looking for, my grandfather the younger William was born in Headford St in 1872 but they moved around so much and Ancestry doesn't give info if just the address is typed in. Typed in lots of variations but not Johnston.
Thanks too for the info from 1851 as William's father as given on the marriage cert is George and the ages fit. Cheers Arlibop
