Last night, there was a mention of the old TV show Quatermass and the Pitt. Apparently they found the name in a phone book from London's East end in the 1960s. There was only one then. As for the original origin, perhaps it's something to do with the army term Quartermaster? Try a Google on origin of manes.

Off the top of my head it might derive from the Army position/rank of Quartermaster. Purely a guess but it might be an avenue worth pursuing?
