Can anyone recommend software for me to store my family history and I need to be able to copy individual parts on to CD's for other members of the family. I have done all the researching on Genes but I want to export it using Gedcom into another usable programme.
Hope this makes sense, I know what I want but it is difficult putting it into words.

Makes perfect sense Persose.... I used Heritage Family Tree when I did mine - was about 30 new from Amazon ...... however, since I have found a great company at www.tribalpages.com where you can upload a gedcom to you own webspace (really easy - must have been for me to do it!!) and free if you limited the number of pictures you upload and about 18 a year if you have loads of pictures to add ...... would give you the address and password for my site to let you look but don't really want to broadcast it to the world and don't know how I can tell you privately...... but if you go to the tribal pages site you can see how it works..... and that way other relatives can access it from anywhere and you can still generate reports and print them off (with the upgraded 18/year version)

Might be cheaper in the long run...... be interested to know what you decide to use.....

Thank you echokilo, just what I needed to know. Will take a look at it all when I have time. Will post a message on this site for you to know which I use.
I used to use and loved Family Tree Maker because it supports loads of other different file varieties. However they have tinkered with it and the new version makes me want to scream!!!!!
Whats gone wrong with family tree maker barmaid? Was thinking about buying that to run with roots magic
Seems you have started quite a debate Perose ......!! But it's good to know these things work before splashing out!! Good luck.

tickled, it just doesn't seem so user friendly as the last release. The screens have all changed too. Plus when you are entering children or their details, you have to keep clicking back on the parent, else you enter them as children of the children. The old style FTM was just so much easier to use with each family group display with Ma and Pa at top and children underneath. Now its all different. I am about used to it now, but its just not as easy to run with as the last release.

Also it has not imported some of my old release FTM files completely which had LOADS of notes and attachments (certificates, newspaper articles, commentary etc), which is a right clat to reconstruct - particularly cos I can't find the disk for the last release!!!
Barmaid, I still use an old version of FTM and it works fine. Why upgrade?.

perose, to save expense have a look on ebay to see if there's any 2nd hand software, maybe Barmaid will sell you theirs. Tribalpages is a brilliant site, well worth using.

Thank you Sigma, I have looked on e bay and can you tell me if "Family Tree Maker 2005 Deluxe 6 CD Full UK Data" would be suitable for what I need. Being new to this I do not want to buy the wrong one. I need to put parts on to CD's for different parts of the family.
The parts of your tree will be exported in GEDCOM format and the person viewing it will need the appropriate software to see it.
The only way round it as I can see is to print out hard copies of the relevant sections ie.Descendants of or Ancestors of

Thank you Rick, I have had a look on ebay. Is it "Who do you think you are, Family Tree Maker" that you use as that seems to be the one listed.

Rick, can you put parts of the tree on to CD or the whole of it. I have a large tree in Genes as I have branched out rather a lot . Could I transfer it with Gedcom and could I seperate it for different members of the family.
Sorry to be a pain.
I don't go much on these programmes, unless the relatives that you send your copies to have the same programme, or you have difficulties.

I use Excel. Most people with a computer have it, and if they haven't, they can get 'Open Office' on the internet for free, which is compable with MS Excel.

You can add pictures, and by using the 'insert Comment', you can add all the information.

I have put my Family Tree on Excel, and sent it to relatives in France, Germany and around the UK. I have also saved it 'with Pics' to copy onto disc, and 'without Pics' to send bye-mail.

Looks like this...
