I've posted this in family as well as I don't know which will get the better response.

Is it possible to actually go to the GRO to look for birth records. I need to find the date of birth of a family member, I've been on Ancestry but it only gives me the quarter in that year that the birth was registered. I've tried looking for any details on Directgov but it's really not very helpful.

you can either order the short copy or full copy birth certificate onlune for a fee, go into the register office where it was originally registered and get a copy short or full certificate for a small charge (the small one will do if you just want DOB). If the person is still alive and you want to check whether it's their 100th birthday maybe?

I asked at my local registry office if they could give me an exact date of a marriage...I knew the year and the month...........they refused and said they didn't give out this info and that I would have to but a certificate.

if you tell me the name of the registration district from the GRO index i can tell you where the office is and if you're local you can pop in or a short certificate, they are only £5.50 and give date of birth or you can order the full one online for £7, it will be delivered within 7 days, see link:
