this is given as the birthplace of a 3x great grandfather, James McMullen, on the 1911 census (the only record of him I can find in England, although he was in Liverpool from at least 1872, when his son Richard was born) but as far as I can find out it doesn't exist. Can anyone think what the modern name of this place might be?? Even a county would help! ty

What age was he in 1911.......what's his wife's name and age and how many years were they married?
If he was 59 in 1901 he is on the census in Liverpool Dale St District, living as a boarder. occupaTION LOOKS Like sugar house labourer
In 1891 could he have been the father-in-law of a John Churchill? Or have i got the wrong one?

sorry peeps, lost internet yesterday!! in 1911 he was 76 and widowed, and living with his son Richard McMullen. I've seen the 1891 Churchill connection but I don't thinks it's the same person, Richard was born in 1872 in Liverpool, although I can't find him on the 1881 census to see if he had any siblings. The earliest I've found him is 1901, but which time he was married with kids of his own.
If he was a Hairdresser I've found him in the 1891 census, not that this helps much as he was a visitor at the home of a Isabella Howard.
^^ Richard that is, not James.

Richard was a barber and tobacconist, I've got quite a lot on him as he emigrated to America in 1921, so that sounds like it might be him. Not sure what the Howard connection is!
Do you have a copy of Richards birth certificate......I've found a few James McMullins and McMullans so the mother's name would help.
Question Author
no, although it's looking like I might have to get it...all I know about his mother is that she was English and obviously died before 1911.
I think you'll need the birth certificate to have any chance. Besides the various surname variations the Irish were notorious for swapping their christian names around. e.g. Joseph John would be Joesph on one census and John on another, so to have any degree of certainty you're going to need the mother's name.

I thought as much, thanks for your effort anyway!
I can't see a connection to isabella Howard family wise as in 1871 she was in Bury already with her husband and daughter and so it lks like Richard was just a lodger.
Oh and have you lked for Mullen cos there are a few possibles without the Mc prefix
