Google maps

Anyone else been using google maps as part of their research?

I've found it quite fascinating looking at where some of my ancestors lived in the Shetlands....

I've used it to look at the houses my Cheshire ancestors lived in it's good for rural areas, not so good in cities, have you been able to work out how to link it to your research. (I have a terrible headache so think I should log off)

I haven't yet, but intend to do so. At present I want to make full use of the subscription to one of the family history sites and time spent on google maps (free) is time not spent gathering information. I don't really want to renew the subscription again, at least not for a while. Once I have exhausted the Census records, BMD and the like then I would like to use the street view to see how many of the addresses still remain and what they look like. Estate agent sites are also good. If you can find either the property itself or one in the same road, you get pictures and info such as floor plans, what alterations have been made over the years, and of course the value of it now.

Rose that;s why I use the £18 a month ancestry package, I can stop it and start it when i choose, it's really good as if i am ever not going to be online for a few weeks i can suspend the account until I want it again

Thanks for the tip, Dotty. Right now I use the 1911 Census far too much to PayAsYouGo. That would be a good option for the future :)

I use it all the time craft! I want to know where they lived and the houses etc. I also use an old maps site from time to time. Can't remember the name of it right now, but when I refind an old link, I'll post it. It has some good OS maps from the last century. Ideally you are meant to buy them, but you can still get some good views.

it will be either alan godfrey or frith BM< I have a framed frith map on my lounge wall with the 6"OS map of 1891 for the place i grew up.
Alan Godfrey reprints all the old OS maps, i have one of his for Bolton and one for Fulham and Hammersmith they are excellent to have.

£18 a month ancestry package dotty, that's expensive?

it's the worldwide all singing all dancing package and it's affordable to me to do it monthly with my card, as i say, if i know i won't be using it for a few weeks i have the option to miss a month, suits me really well,

and as it's my main hobby and i don't smoke drink go out play bingo or even get to shop much these days it's quite a cheap hobby!
