Why is it considered bad luck to have your Christmas decorations up after Twelth Night (6th Jan. aka Epiphany)?

I understood it to be that bad luck would befall households that took their decorations down BEFORE 12th night.

Epiphany is the end of the Christmas celebrations so the decorations should stay until then.
I always believed it was because the decorations used to be made of natural foilage, and therefore you had natural woodland spirits in your house. This meant that they had to be let out of the house within a certain time, otherwise they were trapped and you would incur bad luck. Something like that.
