is destiny real?

nope, you have free will, but your actions will be constrained by the actions of others. Just an almost infinite number of decisions taken by an almost infinite number of people.

I like the metaphor my friend uses.

You are a train and your life is the track. You can go on any tracks you want, and decide on different directions, but you will always have to travel to the same stations. That is, you can make your own decisions to a point, but the important things are destined to happen to you whatever you do.

The problem with fairkatrina's answer, good as it is, is that if something is destined, you can't change it, then your life is pre-planned, and now your talking about an almighty creator. need I go on?.
