how did knock down ginger ( when you used to knock on a door and run away) get its name, can anyone shed any light????

Knock down ginger was the name of the game show segment in the short lived 1989 television comedy chat show One hour with Jonathan Ross. The segment was notable for introducing comedians Vic Reeves, Bob Mortimer, Charlie Higson and others to television. The comedians would be behind a number of doors and the contestants would knock on the doors and then face some questions from them.

I used to play it in the 50s
He does seem to have been awound for a bwoody age though.
We called it 'thunder and lightning'
we called it knock-a-doorie (pronounced door-ay). Maybe thats just what they call it in certain places?

When I played it in the 70s we called it knock down ginger cause you could only knock on doors that were painted dark yellow or orange.

Is cos the first person to do it played it with a boy or girl who was ginger, and in their haste to get away from the door, they knocked down ginger? that is the best reason ever isnt it?!!
We called it "Rat a tat ginger". No idea how it came about though sorry.
