You're hearing their wings as they vibrate in flight.
When bees buzz they are informing other bees with a little dance beating thier wings, where to find the nectar in thier honey making process.
I think i remember on QI stephen fry saying the buzzing is not the wings, thats a misconception Im sure it was something to do with them breating.

how is it that when they land on something they stop buzzing (breathing) sometimes for over an hour.....
well i just looked on the QI website and the question "why do bees buzz" is there so im pretty sure its not the wings as that is too obvious
