Pronunciation of Greek Myth Names

Hi Folks,

I was never into Greek myths & legends at school so don't remember the pronunciation of these. Trouble is I have to display them with "easy to read" pronunciations as the children I'm teaching are only 7 and 8 years old.

Eg 1) Athenians -> a - THEE - nee - ans
Hoping this first one is correct. If not please let me know. The others are:-
2) King Aegeus -> AGE - us ?
3) Ariadne -> AR � ee � ADD � nee ?
4) Pelias
5) Ae�tes
6) Argonaughts -> ARE � gone � orts ?
7) Colchis
8) Thebes
9) Medea

Aegeus is EE-Gee-US

3 is correct

4 is PEL-EYE-US

5 is EYE-EET-EESE

6 is ARG -OH-NOUGHTS

7 is COL-KISS

8 is THEEBES

9 is MED-DEE-AH

6 is spelled Argonauts

Just to restate Andy's (perfectly correct) answer - I think you used caps and lower case to indicate where the stress lies in the word. Using the same technique


Aegeus is ee-GEE-us

3 is correct

4 is pel-EYE-us

5 is eye-EET-eese

6 is ARG -oh-noughts (think astronauts - it's where they pinched the name from!)

7 is COL-kiss

8 is THEEBS i.e. it's not a two syllable word (think Phoeb's in Friends)

9 is me-DEE-ah
