Hi guys,

Does anyone know the story of an ancient Greek general who asked each of his generals to name the best fighter (I think) - to which they all replied that they each were - thus determining the 2nd choice was actually the best as they'd all chosen the same person.

Sorry if that sounds odd, but I know it has something to do with the battle of Salamis. But can't find that particular story on the internet anywhere.

Yes, but it's more to do with the fact each person was asked to name the best fighter/general/commander to which they all said they were, but the guy 'm talking about said that as they'd all chosen each other, the 2nd choice was in fact the best as they'd all chosen the same person

Sounds to me exactly the sort of thing Thucydides would have said, He was an army general and a historian - he wrote the history of the Peloponnesian war.
Sorry I haven't got a copy of his work to hand to chck further
And yes, Salamis was naval battle
