Looking for a place where my grandfather live and have tried googling it, no luck.
Looking for Sun Cottages, St Marylebone, North Marylebone. Any ideas as to where this could be? would have been around 1918 so probably now has a completely different address. my mother would love t visit the location.
I found a reference here - http://booth.lse.ac.u...ue_notebook&args=b358 "Sun Cottages" is listed with Providence Place, Harmon Street and Union Street, but these are not near together, so don't help locate Sun Cottages.
On the 1911 census there were only 8 cottages and they were enumerated between Providence Place and Burne St and the families living in those 8 cottages were , :
Brodie; Ford (how weird is that my Dad was Broady and his mum was Ford! ); Reynolds, armstrong, howlett, Wall, Pink and West.
Thanks so much for all your info my mother is over the moon with all the findings now wants to find out more about her grandparents past. ABerrant couldnt have asked for more fantastic what you have found. anyone who can uncover any more would be more than welcome in the meantime i have e-mailed the last finding in the hope she has not changed her e-mail address. thankyou all so much. x
Building on Dotty's info I have had a play around with http://www.old-maps.co.uk and the cluster of buildings between Burne St and Providence Place can be seen on maps after about 1860. If you look at the google map, you can find Bell St, Burne St and Lisson St off the A40 in Paddington. The properties you're looking for stood inbetween these streets - I'd post an image from Old Maps if it weren't in breach of their terms n conditions, so you'll have to have a search for yourself!
Wha thank yer, Smurf - I'm not a geninololgist tho', but more social history / landscape archaeology, but I accept the comp in the spirit of Oh My God did you see that clip of Tom Jones on the one show wearing budgie smugglers....sorry got distracted,
smurfchops they are bloody fantastic! it was amazing to see my grandfathers name pop up on the screen. and thankyou so much mosaic for your input aww i could kiss you guys its all so exciting!!
Sun Cottages were situated on ground at the rear of the pub. Access was via a passageway along the right hand side of the building and the passage entrance still exists behind the metal gate to the right of the grey door.
fantastic ABerrant, my mother is looking forward to visiting the area atsome point. through this we have found a distant relative and have found out loads about our family history. all this from asking you guys one question! couldn't have done it without you. xx
Most of Burne Street has been replaced by a multi storey car park when the Marylebone flyover was built (c. 1970). If you go to the Collage of London website you can find photos of Burne Street as it was.
My family lived in Burne Street in 1870's - hence the interest.
Good luck!
