can you please tell me who invented self tan and why

I don't think it was invented as such, more likely it just evolved.  During the transition in Hollywood to colour, a tanned person became the icon for a fit and healthy look.  Bronzers were developed for make up artists to make actors and actresses look 'healthy' from this it became a popular product for the general public (much like plastic surgery, religions and fad diets today).  From then on the desire for an all-round yearly tan drove the market into developing bronzers and self-tanning products as well as generating sales of sun-beds.

It was developed by leathery faced Essex bints to make themselves look even more orange.
Its since filtered down to the twenty to thirty year old females who try to be a bit more upper class than they actually so obviously are. And just look orange as well.

Personally, I think Jodie Marsh invented it as she seems to use a tone!
