King Charles III OR King George VII

I have started reading a book about King Charles II, written in the mid 1800's by an American author, Jacob Abbot.
He states that the first two King Charles were so unpopular that it was very unlikely that we would ever have a King Charles III.
This puzzled me because I had always thought that Prince Charles would take the title of Charles III when he becomes king.
On googling it, I find that it is a possibility that he will take the title George VII.
I am very interested in history and the monarchy, but this is something new to me, and I wonder if it is common knowledge? or is it something I have missed?

nobody knows what name he will take. He may not know himself. But he can change his name if he wants. George VI's first name was Arthur; George was his fourth name. Charles is Charles Philip Arthur George.

The first King Charles lost his head. The second was pretty popular, though.
I think you'll find that George VI's first name was Albert not Arthur
Neither - he will be push up the daisies before his mother....
pushing
quite correct - brainstorm on my part, sorry. He was known to family as Bertie, which should have given me a clue.
He won't take any "..... the Third" title because of it's unfortunate modern rhyming slang connotation.

Just another example of insanity running in royal families.
JNO: You say Charles 11 was popular but it depends who you read,
tall, but popular?
lets hope we bypass him and go straight to William
popular, renaissance man and all that. As to Charles I think he would go with George
Charles has spent his entire life waiting to fill a dead womans shoes. It would be cruel to pass him over for his son.
em10 popular ???who - Charles ????
Sadly he won't go with Philip in honour of his father....Arthur would be most fun but I think he has always said he would go with George....
I understand that our present Queen chose to use her own name because she was asked what name she would rule with shortly after her father had died and she just said "Oh Elizabeth of course" without giving it much thought. I think it will be much harder for future monarchs to take on a name that they haven't been known by because by and large we are not a society that deals in titles. We say e.g. "Princess Di" or "Camilla" regardless of what their formal title may be.
personally I would be happier is we bypassed the monarchy altogether........and soon.

Charles 11 was popular, as far as i have read.

there wasn't that much opposition to Charles II - when you compare him to his brother, "dismal Jimmy", who was chased out of the country after only two years.
