Yes I remember it, don't know if it helped anyone though, I do seem to recall a story in the papers about one lad that had been sent on safari being sent to prison later on.

perhaps a lion ate one of them, or is that in poor taste...
I dunno about that particular project, but it's a common thought process that some people can be shown something better, given the opportunity to achieve something by honesty and hard work and thereby leave their old criminal pasts behind them. Does it work? Yes and no. No for the majority it doesn't ( completely anyway) not because the idea itself is not a good one, but because the people concerned cannot or will not take it far enough in their personal social lives for it to make a difference. When it works it usually works because the young person concerned removes themselves totally from their previous social group, thereby giving themselves space to really focus on their future without third party interference or judegments by friends or family. It's like being a drug addict, you'll always be one however hard you try until you divorce yourself from other users. Criminality is no different.
That scheme rings a bell, It's not running now. The Idea was that kids who had run off the rails were somehow the result of societies failings and as tax payers we should help these poor criminals.
Labour Government for you.

Tory government, wasn't it?
The Tories are always full of daft schemes like this. Hug a hoody indeed.
sorry, I should have put quotation marks around most of my last post, as I was quoting Rymnt.

read further down that link. They date back to Major's government, as I recall. They were canned, then reinstated.

Nothing more was ever heard of those offenders.

I think it was an experimental wildlife feeding project.

I remember the case of the kid who was given a trip to centerparcs to help cure his kleptomania. He spent the whole time nicking stuff as I recall.

The two case workers who accompanied him had a nice time in the pool though, so it wasn't a complete waste of time and money.
