Which Pumpkins?

Which pumpkins can you use for cooking, such as making soup?

Are the "normal" pumpkins you can buy from every shop, at the moment, for carving are they edible?

Definitely edible...make soup,pumpkin pie,roast,bake....you can do alsorts with it.
Oh-and wash,dry and roast the seeds.

Thanks Pasta...I was told, only a few days ago, that the pumpkins that are on sale at the moment are not edible and only really sold for the carving for Halloween..so I thought I would ask.

Yes, they are. You can make soup from the flesh, or roast it. Both are very delicious. Or used the cooked flesh pureed and mixed with condensed milk as a sweet pie filling - sickly in my opinion, but my American friend loves it

agree with Pasta.

I use the flesh to make a pumpkin cake and pumpkin soup, the seeds get spiced and roasted. Delicious. Cheap meals too.

I used to love pumpkin pie as a kid...lovely with cinnamon and allspice in it. I'd mix the flesh with cream...not so sickly.

Kat think someone is winding you up, the flesh that you hollow out of the pumpkins can be used as by previous persons.

pasta - so when you make pumpkin pie, you'd just use spices and not anything to sweeten it? That does sound a lot more appealing!

Pumpkin pie is delish! It shouldn't be sickly as far as I'm aware.

Most recipes call for sugar. I'd prefer dark brown as it has more flavour.

Hmmm, might give it a try then, pasta. Come to think of it, my friend does take two sugars in her tea, so I guess she likes very sweet things.

I'm all set to make a batch of pumpkin pies this afternoon as OH and the family enjoyed them last week and have put in thier requests for more!

But I did notice in Sainsburys that they have labelled the pumpkins as "Carving pumpkins" and have them in the big boxes near the doors. They then have others on the vegetable racks labelled as edible pumkins at twice the price. Very cheeky and misleading. These others are just a different variety and and probably have slightly less water content.

So follow Pasta's link and use whatever pumpkins you have at your disposal!
(If i have any puree when I make the pies I freeze to use again when they've gone from our shelves)

Just thought, Kat, possibly whoever told you they were inedible was getting confused with the ornamental gourds that are on sale at the moment for autumn table decorations.
