Army Records

My father has died and I am trying to arrange his funeral. He served during the second world war in Europe, Africa and finally Burma. He spoke very little about his experiences and I cannot remember what regiment he served with. Is it possible to obtain this information and if so, where?

I did the same after my father died 7 years ago and I do have details and an address I think,but I will have to look it out and get back to you.As far as I remember I needed his army number and regiment,but may be possible without this,as that would just make it easier for them!

Dis he belong to a Regimental Association ? If so, they may be able to help.

He would have been awarded campaign medals and these would usually have his service number engraved on the edges. Speak to his close men friends, especially those he knew for a long time - the may have shared memories which might give you important leads, ie, regiment, company etc.

The fact that he went on to serve in Burma after fighting in North Africa and Europe will narrow your search considerably as not many units did this, unless he transferred regiments. Once you have discovered his regiment there will be websites you can access for more leads.

The essentials are regiment and service number.
