Why would India choose to adopt a secular style of government when it first gained independence?

because it wanted to set itself apart from Pakistan's Muslim government



because it had a diverse population consisting of many different religious and ethnic groups





because it was required to do so by Great Britain as a condition of gaining independence



because the people of India determined through plebiscite that that was the government they desired

You need to do a bit of basic research first. When India was granted independence in 1947 Pakistan did not exist it was part of India.
A few hours of 'googling' will answer virtually all your questions.
