In Dad's Army, Captain Mainwaring has a square, brown, flash, worn at the top of each arm of his battledress. It reads "C P
1 "
Meaning Commander Platoon 1 ? Or something else?

The formation badges (CP1 for Walmington Platoon and CP2 for Eastgate Platoon) were supposedly based on the initials of David Croft and Jimmy Perry.

Thanks for that. it looks, from Jonathan's link, that CP1 is an entirely fictional badge and Aberrant is dead right.
I would have thought it stood for "Citizens' Patrol", but I could be wrong.

Those letters would have signified the county that the home guard were based in and the number would have shown which HQ it was. For example Ashby-de-la-Zouche in Leicester was LEI 11. Walmington on sea was a made up place so they made up the letters to represent a made up county and decided to pick their own initials.
