Classic '70S (?) School Picture Book About A Tree?

I was thinking today about a picture/story book I recall being read at primary school in London, roughly 1985.

Back in those days the school had an overhead projector, and must have been able to get these books in slide format. We used to all sit in the assembly hall and have the story shown/read out in the afternoons. Good times.

All I can remember is that the book was about this sort of magic tree. There was a boy or a girl that found it, and climbed it. Then they could go quite high up. I remember the pictures being very colourful, beautiful and slightly psychedelic.

I don't know why but it was in my mind today, and I'd love to look on those pictures and read the prose again one more time.

I realise this is not much to go on, but does this ring bells with anyone? I'd love to hear suggestions for the book so that I could look online. I have been searching this afternoon using keywords, and checking various classic children's lists.

n.b. probably worth saying: it may not be '70s. It could be earlier. It could even be '80s. I'm merely speculating on that.
