Where Do I Look To Sell Monty's Letter

I have a handwritten letter signed by Field Marshall Montgomery which he sent to my aunt from Sicily during the war. I believe this to be worth some money but don't know where to start selling it

Go to an auction house specialising in wartime memorabilia.

For something with a high profile name attached to it it's always worth contacting Sotheby's because they really do push the boat out for their auctions in terms of publicity and having a good contact list. My mother sold some Churchill letters through them and my brother has some muscial manuscripts in their June sale and they are very thorough and cost effective. You might think they charge a lot for photographs etc but you will get far and away the best price with them as opposed to a small local auction house. If you contact their Arms and Militaria department initially they can advise you from there.

Sotheby's , Christie's, Bonhams are all worth a try and I have bought historic documents at all three. These big auction houses, however, are really only interested if the letter is itself of historic importance, or its contents are of interest to historians or other specialists and collectors. It has to be of interest in some context relevant to some other area.

Better , in my opinion is IAA. All they sell is autographs and autograph letters and documents. They are known by every collector of such material, across the world, just as Sotheby's is known for art. The range of lots they have is enormous, from estimates at about fifty pounds to tens of thousands, and from such things as a signed photograph of Jerome K Jerome and a palace order for costumes for Henry VIII's musicians. Their auctions run for two days at a time and have well over a thousand lots
