Sluggish Mail

Can anyone explain why I can receive emails almost instantly on my desktop and laptop, yet it can sometimes take up to several hours before they appear on my Samsung Galaxy tablet?

Do you use the stock e-mail program on the tablet or have you downloaded an app. I believe there is/was a problem with the hotmail app delaying e-mails.
