Women In 1930's And Early 40's Japan

Women in Japan 1930's and early 40's?
I am creating a graphic novel which has a segment involving two younger teenage sisters in 1930's Japan. I need someone to tell me if their story sounds plausible, and answer a lot of other more visual questions.
The two sister's mother passed away from kidney failure, and their father became depressed and became alcoholic, wasting all of his money on booze and other pointless things. He neglects the sisters, ages 13 and 15. He winds up without any money to even take care of himself, and sells both sisters into prostitution in order to pay off debts. The girls are passed off as older than they really are, and put to work. The older of the two flees with her younger sister, and wanders the streets for months, until she loses sight of her younger sister and never finds her again.
Does this sound plausible for the time period?
What were conditions like for a middle class family in Japan then?
What would be the schooling of the two?
How would girls their age have dressed regularly?
What were conditions in brothels?
Was life on the streets impossible for two young girls? The older of the two passes for a boy because of her height.
Thank you for reading, and answer anything you can!
